Chapter Twenty-three
Detective Inspector George Beaumont and Constable Candy Nichols made their way to Naansense, the bustling Indian restaurant in Woodhouse. It was a crisp autumn evening, and the aroma of spices and curries hung in the air, mingling with the laughter and chatter of university students who frequented the place. As they entered the restaurant, the colourful decorations and soft Indian music transported them to a different world.
They approached the host at the front of the restaurant, who greeted them with a warm smile. âTable for two?â
George flashed his warrant card. âIâm Detective Inspector Beaumont, and this is Constable Nichols. Weâre here to speak with the manager regarding one of your employees, Laura Bennett.â
The host nodded and motioned for them to follow him. She weaved through the labyrinthine layout of tables and booths, filled with patrons savouring their meals until they reached the restaurantâs office, George and Candy following her. She knocked gently on the door before opening it to reveal a middle-aged man seated behind a cluttered desk, engrossed in paperwork.
âSir,â she said, âthe police are here to speak with you about Laura Bennett.â
The man looked up, his face a mixture of curiosity and concern. âOf course, please, have a seat,â he said, gesturing to two chairs in front of his desk.
George and Candy took their seats, and he introduced himself as Arjun Singh, the restaurant owner. He was a stout man with a thick moustache, his attire reflecting his professionâs demands, with an apron still tied around his waist.
âWhat can you tell us about Laura Bennett, Mr. Singh?â George inquired, getting straight to the point.
Mr. Singh leaned back in his chair, folding his hands on his desk. âLaura has been a reliable employee for the year sheâs worked here. Sheâs punctual, hard-working, and pleasant with the customers. Iâve never had any complaints about her.â
George nodded, and Candy made notes.
âMay I ask what this is all about?â Arjun asked.
George decided to break the grim news to Mr Singh. He leaned forward slightly and spoke with a sympathetic tone, âIâm afraid we have some unfortunate news, Mr Singh. Laura Bennett has passed away.â
The colour drained from Mr Singhâs face, and he gasped in shock. âWhat? How? What happened?â
George decided to provide only the necessary details for now. âWeâre investigating the circumstances of her death. Itâs suspicious, and we are trying to piece together her activities leading up to it.â
Candy added, âThatâs why weâre here, Mr Singh, to gather any information you may have about Lauraâs recent days or if she had any issues you were aware of.â
Mr Singh seemed shaken by the news but composed himself as best he could. âI had no idea anything was wrong. Laura never mentioned any trouble to me. She was always focused on her job.â
George nodded understandingly. âWe understand, Mr Singh. Weâll need access to her employment records, schedules, and any contact information you have for her. Weâre trying to build a timeline of her activities leading up to her death.â
Mr Singh quickly retrieved a folder from a nearby shelf and handed it to Detective Inspector Beaumont.
